DIRECTOR: KATH ROGERS
1704 - Captain Plume and Sergeant Kite return from the Battle of Blenheim to raise recruits and relax in the small market town of Shrewsbury. Farquhar's warm hearted and realistic comedy depicts the army's abuse of sex, money, law and class without condemning or condoning it. The play celebrates the joyous humour and straightforward sexuality of small town life, in contrast to the knowing cynicism and pointed cruelty of the London based Restoration plays of the time.
